Project Title:
The Logics of Crisis in Spain: Everyday Economic Struggles and Grassroots Responses to the Neoliberal State
Project Abstract:
As the Spanish state suspended almost all social protection and welfare for its citizens following the 2008 Eurozone crisis, many Spaniards have participated to grassroots local networks for economic survival and livelihood, ranging from neighborhood piggybanks to community food and labor exchange. These networks do not simply help Spaniards make the ends meet; participants also consider them as a space for struggle against the neoliberal state to restore justice, equality, and dignity. This project examines these networks in Barcelona to illuminate grassroots economic models as well as political and moral debates underlying how actors negotiate and define the conditions of their everyday lives and survival in times of crisis.
