Project Title:
Proposal for an International Development Planning Workshop in Solo, Indonesia
Project Abstract:
This proposal will result in the development of an international development planning workshop that critically engages the complexities and nuances involved in community-based planning for poor, urban communities in the global South. The graduate course will be taught for the first time during the spring semester in 2014. The workshop focuses on two issues in Surakarta (Solo), Indonesia: (1) household and community access to reliable sources of potable water; and (2) access to secure shelter and public space. The workshop has three collaborators in Indonesia: an NGO (Yayasan Kota Kita), the municipal government, and faculty and students at Atma Jaya University. The course will serve as a basis for an ongoing partnership among the Department of City and Regional Planning at Cornell University and our collaborators in Indonesia. As a result of the complexity encompassed in the urban planning issues outlined above, the number of institutional actors involved, and the need to build relationships based on trust, a longer term engagement has the potential to facilitate a more meaningful educational and planning outcomes. In addition to the workshop, the collaborative relationship will serve as a foundation for student internships, research and international exchange in both directions.
