Project Title:
Education Services in Urban India: Demand, Use, and Gender Bias
Project Abstract:
The Einaudi Center seed grant will support initial research into the demand for private education services among the poor in India. This study will focus on several key roles of pricing in this market. Through a field experiment with a provider of private tutoring services in Delhi, we will investigate how prices influence the number and composition of those willing to take up the services, and whether prices can induce more frequent attendance through a psychological effect. We will also study how the salience of gender can impact demand of these services. This work will contribute to a broader agenda on optimal pricing strategy for private education providers.
