Project Title:
Becoming sickle cell: The lived experience of an emergent global health priority in Tanzania
Project Abstract:
My research examines the cultural, economic, and political aspects of managing an emerging global health priority—namely, sickle cell disease—in Tanzania. Sickle cell disease is a genetically inherited blood disorder that largely affects people in malaria-prone regions. It has received notoriously scant attention worldwide, thereby exacerbating North-South health disparities. But in Dar es Salaam, a single clinic has been advocating for the disease since 2004, and this year, a new sickle cell clinic is opening in Mwanza. These centers are redefining the place of sickle cell disease in the contemporary Tanzanian medical marketplace. My project relies on ethnography to explore this transition and the lived experiences it imbricates.
