Project Title:
Evaluation of a smartphone-based vitamin A assessment tool
Project Abstract:
Vitamin A is essential for immune function, and deficiency has consequences for pathogen recognition and inflammatory response. Consuming too much vitamin A is also toxic. An assessment tool for vitamin A deficiency (VAD) is not widely available. Current approaches for measuring VAD are difficult and costly, demanding a need for an accurate point-of-care tool. New lab-on-chip devices utilizing smartphone technology offer accurate, affordable, and mobile solutions for diagnostics. This study will evaluate a Cornell-developed vitamin A assessment tool in Ecuador. Advancement in the detection of VAD will lead to improved vitamin A status, reductions in VAD-associated illness and strengthened immune response in infection endemic regions.
