Project Title:
Land and Local Politics in Kenya
Project Abstract:
With the International Travel Research Grant, I will visit Kenya to undertake two main projects. First, asking what the effects of district amalgamation are on local politics, I will enrich an existing dataset on district creation at the Kenya National Archives, collect constituency-level data on gubernatorial elections from the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission and conduct interviews in the lead-up to the 2017 elections in August in two counties. Second, I will collect data on settlement schemes in Kenya from the National Land Commission and Survey of Kenya to shed light on historical land conflict in the country. These projects will assist me in developing papers and my own dissertation research, which will be on historical land conflict and local politics in Kenya and Africa.
