Project Title:
(Re)Performing the Nation at the Frontier: Haitian and Dominican history and identity
Project Abstract:
This research seeks to complicate the narrative of Haitian and Dominican relations and history by taking music, performance, and spirituality as significant sites of anthropological inquiry. My research has focused on the genres of Haitian and Dominican Rara/Gaga and performances during carnival and Rara season. For this particular project I will continue this research and investigate the continued importance of Rara and Gaga after the season has finished while also investigating other performative cross-border spaces such as sports, protests, and the bi-national market. This investigation will illuminate the discursive and artistic ways cross-border alliances and dialogues are forged via musical and performative spaces
