Project Title:
A study of the socio-medical dimensions of alternative sedentary postures with implications for health and design.
Project Abstract:
Increasing evidence indicates sedentary behavior is a serious public-health concern. While studies have focused on interventions to counter deleterious health effects of chair-sitting, there is dearth of research on alternative seated postures even though these suggest improved health outcomes. In many parts of Asia, chairs are not commonly used either at work or home; floor-sitting or squatting postures is the norm. My research adopts a mixed-methods approach to - document alternative seating practices in India; develop a typology of postures; and compare alternative seated postures with chair-sitting to build a theory seating integrating posture, health and performance.
