Project Title:
Theater Between Home and Exile: New Palestinian Drama
Project Abstract:
Theater Between Home and Exile: New Palestinian Drama brings together research, artistic creation, and pedagogy on Palestinian theater and performance. The project’s goals are threefold. First, through the translation, performance, and publication of new dramatic writing, it offers grassroots perspectives of the on-going Palestinian struggle and Palestinian enmeshment in the current Syrian refugee crisis. Second, it exposes U.S.-based theater artists to groundbreaking new plays, production models, and collaborative creative processes through research on experimental Palestinian theater companies. Third, it creates opportunities for Cornell students to engage directly with Palestinian artists by facilitating artist residencies and developing a theater and performance study abroad program in Palestine and Israel. Funding from an Einaudi Center Seed Grant will enable us to move forward with two elements of this larger project. The first element is the translation and performance of two new full-length dramas by Haifa-based Palestinian playwrights Mas’ud Hamdan and Bashar Murkus. The second is an artist residency at Cornell with the two playwrights, during which there will be pubic readings of their plays and they will offer lectures and workshops on their creative and scholarly work.
