Monuments on Paper: Transatlantic Radical Left and Politics of Memory (1871-1914)
Project Abstract:
In my dissertation, Monuments on Paper: Transatlantic Radical Left and Politics of Memory (1871-1914), I document and theorize the shared language of remembrance within trans-Atlantic radical politics during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. I consider printed ephemera as the language of a shared transnational itinerant memory, from the Paris Commune to radical avant-garde printmakers of fin-de-siècle France, from the Arts and Crafts Movement in England to the Chicago anarchists. I will use the Einaudi Travel Grant to embark on research for my chapter on French avant-garde’s socialist-anarchist appropriation of the iconography of Gothic cathedrals. In the course of my visit, I will visit the Bibliothèque Nationale, Bibliothèque Historique de la Ville de Paris (BHVP), Bibliothèque de l'Hôtel de Ville (BHdV), and at the Musée d'Orsay, to work on radical prints that re-imagined Gothic Cathedrals—the celebrated monuments of 19th century European romantic nationalisms—as memories of pre-industrial emancipated labor.
