Project Title:
Laying the Foundation for Ottoman & Turkish Studies at an Internationalized Cornell University
Project Abstract:
With this seed grant, the Ottoman and Turkish Studies Initiative (OTSI) hopes to capitalize on attention placed on WWI during its centennial to turn the spotlight on to the Middle East and the Balkans; the participation of the peoples of the Ottoman Empire, their experiences, their stories, and of course, the long term impact of the war on that region. The wider goal of this project is to engage the Cornell campus community, and the surrounding academic communities, including Ithaca College, Syracuse University, Colgate University and SUNY Binghamton University, in events designed to invite students and faculty to reflect on this war, by focusing on the experience of the Middle Eastern and the Balkan perceived ‘other.’ The grant will be used to sponsor the invitation of 5 scholars, from a multitude of disciplines and universities. The invited scholars will cover a number of potential topics, including the Armenian Genocide, International Law and WWI in the Middle East, gender roles during the war, Ottoman Jews during WWI, and experiencing the Great War in the Middle East. They will present their work in a public lecture, and where possible, lead senior/grad seminar discussions about their work.
