Project Title:
Peer Effects, Organic Fertilizers, and Soil Health: The Impact of Experiential Learning and Information Transfers on Farmer Valuations of Agricultural Inputs
Project Abstract:
Soils in much of the developing world have serious nutrient deficiencies that prevent many small-scale farmers from escaping poverty. Along with inorganic fertilizers, organic fertilizer use is essential to improve the health of these soils and increase crop yield. Market purchase of certain organic fertilizers such as biochar and vermicompost at competitive prices is one potential solution. This research seeks to use experimental methods and network analysis to determine farmers’ valuation of both traditional and innovative organic fertilizers and the effect of experiential learning through networks in forming these valuations.
