Project Title:
Hygiene in the Highlands: Ethnic Minorities’ Reaction to Relocation and Modernization in Southwest China
Project Abstract:
I plan to do an exploratory reseaerch in Yunnan and Guizhou in Southwest China in the summer of 2016 for my research interest in state relocation projects in rural China. In this project, I am interested in understanding how mountain villagers are accommodating themselves to the socialist regime of hygiene, and I will focus on the ehnic minorities living in the borderlands between China and Vietnam. This field trip will constitute the preliminary research for my dissertation, which would investigate the contemporary regime of hygiene and its changing meanings and practices among the mountain villagers in the highland borderlands of socialist China. In addition, it would be vital in helping me form important and lasting contacts in China.
