Project Title:
Haunted Archives: The Affective Economy of Trauma Narratives in Post-Cold War Southeast Asia
Project Abstract:
My project intervenes into Cold War histories of Southeast Asia by taking into account mediated memories of the traumatic past in contemporary cinema and literature. While the aftermath of the Cold War witnessed vigorous scholarly attempts to untangle messy historical  situations of the war, less attention has been paid to the ways in which vestiges of war continue to shape the region’s aesthetic and everyday practices. Through an investigation of films and literary works from Laos, Thailand, and Cambodia, the project proposes to chart melancholic renderings of historical trauma alternative to official narratives of the Cold War and conventional realist modes of representing political violence.
