Project Title:
Keyboard Networks: Aesthetics, Power, Diplomacy
Project Abstract:
This interdisciplinary project is conceived as a year-long undertaking running for the academic year 2015-2016, in the form of a reading group and two international symposia (one each semester). Looking particularly to topics in 19th- and 20th-century European keyboard culture, areas of inquiry include: Keyboards in diplomacy (state sponsored musician tours and keyboards and keyboard music as representational of international relations), international circulation of musicians (cosmopolitanism versus the cultivation of national identity in international contexts), cultivating keyboards (monuments, commemorative festivals, canonization, piano competitions, representations of keyboards in film, literature, and visual arts), the keyboard and discipline (the piano in pedagogy and the piano as pedagogical tool, institutionalization of performing traditions, keyboards as instruments in service of empire and colonization).
