Project Title:
How inclusive are agricultural investments? The social dynamics of agricultural partnerships in Tanzania
Project Abstract:
Development agencies, governments, and corporations are collaborating to increase investment in African agriculture. They frame many of these efforts as ‘inclusive,’ arguing they benefit low income farmers and agricultural workers. Yet linking African farmers with agribusiness entails conflicting interests and divergent impacts for women and men and small and large farmers. Through a placement at Tanzania’s SAGCOT Centre, a leading initiative in agricultural investment, I will explore how projects define and implement ‘inclusiveness’ and how rural residents respond. I will characterize investment trends, elucidate the perspectives of various staff, and identify case studies for my dissertation research.
