Project Title:
Synchrony in Finnish Tango: The perception of musical beat and its manifestation in physical and social domains
Project Abstract:
As a part of my dissertation project, this short-term research will explore how the perception of musical beat informs the physical synchronization and social affiliation in the context of Finnish tango. Because music-induced body movements reflect stressed beat, and interpersonal synchrony predicts both social affiliation and self-esteem, I will manupulate music onset, capture motion data, and collect affiliative ratings in this experiment. My project marks one of the first attempts at revealing the underlying connection across music cognition, embodied cognition, and social cognition within the same context. It is widely applicable and will equip me with solid technical skills and valuable insights in interdisciplinary research.
