Project Title:
Shrinking Cities in Urbanized China: Geographic Diversity of State Rescaling
Project Abstract:
has addressed this issue in developing world. The “developing” tag is likely to masking the shrinking problem, and diverting interests to the growing and mega cities. Therefore, this research aims to build a model of shrinking cities in China to identify the problematic regions and regional problems. As China’s urbanization is primarily state-led at different levels, government policies and its multilevel dynamics will be given particular attention to explore the impacts of state rescaling on local government developmental practices. I will spend summer 2017 in China collecting secondary data, interviewing local officials and conducting field studies. Thus, this project not only contributes urban shrinkage studies in developing countries but also provides implications on planning and policy responses in a shrinking context with a multilevel governance perspective.
