Lakhdar Brahimi, former Special Advisor to the Secretary General of the United Nations and Algeria’s former Minister of Foreign Affairs.
For more than 10 years, Ambassador Lakhdar Brahimi served as the U.N. top envoy pursuing diplomacy in conflict zones such as Haiti, South Africa, Afghanistan, and Iraq. In January 2004 he became Special Adviser to the Secretary-General of the U.N. advising the Secretary-General on a wide range of issues, including the prevention and resolution of conflicts. Brahimi, a former Algerian Foreign Minister, has won praise for efforts to stabilize Afghanistan and Iraq after U.S. led forces ousted their governments. One of Brahimi’s most notable accomplishments was his report in 2000 on the U.N.’s past peace operations which became known as the “Brahimi Report".
