The primary goal of the theme projects is to advance systematic, evidence-based knowledge of social processes by harnessing the potential of interdisciplinary, collaborative research. Theme projects are selected through a competitive, peer-review process that rewards intellectual merit, research excellence, and the potential for fruitful interdisciplinary collaboration, central to debates in academia and in the public sphere. Beginning in 2015, the ISS will fund two 5-person theme projects rather than one 10-person project, which was the model from 2004-2014. The total annual amount of ISS funding will be unchanged, but will be divided between projects.  Each theme project lasts three years and must be interdisciplinary and connect researchers from different administrative units.
