The Einaudi Center and its associated Programs offer a wide range of support and assistance to graduate and undergraduate students in search of funding for their international research, study, and scholarship. Throughout the academic year, the Einaudi Center in collaboration with associated programs, Cornell Career Services and the Graduate School offers information sessions for students that plan to apply for any of these funding opportunities. Please see our calendar of events.

International Research Travel Grants

Direct funding for Cornell graduate students is available in the form of International Research Travel Grants sponsored by the Einaudi Center. The goal is to encourage graduate student research and field work in countries outside the United States. Each year this competitive program supports 50 to 80 graduate students from all fields of study.

Fulbright and Fulbright-Hays

The Einaudi Center manages Cornell's participation in the annual nationwide Fulbright Program of the U.S. Department of State and the Fulbright-Hays awards of the U.S. Department of Education. The Center's Fulbright Advisor provides assistance to graduate students applying for these prestigious grants. The annual application deadlines are in September and October.

Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS)

Several Area Studies Programs have been awarded federal funding to support FLAS Fellowships. These fellowships assist graduate students in foreign language and area or international studies.

Special International Program Funding

Several area and thematic studies programs offer a wide range of support and assistance to graduate and undergraduate students in search of funding for their international research, study, and scholarship:

• Institute for African Development funding
• Cornell Institute for European Studies funding
• Latin America special funding
• Reppy Institute special funding
• South Asia special funding
• Southeast Asia special funding

Graduate School Conference Grants

Full-time registered students in the Graduate School who have been invited to present papers or posters at professional conferences may apply for grants to help cover expenses related to conference participation. The application deadline is the first day of the month preceding the month in which the conference is scheduled. Awards are announced two weeks after the deadline. Students who have not received confirmation that their papers have been accepted by the application deadline can apply and then later provide the appropriate documentation once it becomes available. Applications are available online and from the Graduate School, 143 Caldwell Hall. 

Graduate School Research Awards

Full-time registered students in the Graduate School can apply for awards for research-related travel in the United States and abroad. These grants are intended for travel during the academic year that is directly related to dissertation research. Funds are not awarded for conference travel. Priority is given to Ph.D. students who have or will have passed the A Exam prior to initiating their travel and to those conducting predissertation research. Travel may be between several weeks to months in duration. The application deadline is Nov. 1 for fall travel and Feb. 1 for spring or summer travel. Applications are available online and from the Graduate School, 143 Caldwell Hall. 

Post-Doctoral Fellowships and Fellowships for International Students

The Einaudi Center publishes two annual reports that aim to inform graduate students about important funding opportunities related to international studies: a) Post-doctoral fellowships: This report includes over various opportunities from a wide-range of universities and institutions spanning the globe, both geographically and academically; b) Fellowships for international graduate students: This report presents opportunities for international students wanting to study at Cornell and for advanced graduate students seeking funding while writing their dissertation. Please download the Report on post-doctoral fellowships and the Report on fellowships for international students under Attachments at the bottom of the page.

The Graduate School’s searchable database provides a wide range of additional fellowships, grants, and scholarships for graduate students. Please also check the  prestigious fellowships database of Cornell Career Services. To make a comprehensive search of funding opportunities, please use the Community of Science Database (COS) and the Illinois Research Information Service (IRIS) databases. Both are available through the Office of Sponsored Programs offering over 50,000 potential funding opportunities.
