New York Conference on Asian Studies 2009

October 9-10 2009

Asia Plural

What is “Asia Plural”? NYCAS 2009-2010 invites scholars to reflect on the theme of plurality and mobility in order to further understanding of historical and contemporary flows of people, materials, images and ideas across physical and virtual boundaries. Do the commonplace tropes of hybridity, borderlands, diaspora and migration serve for understanding contemporary globalization? How do broad-ranging new technologies alter relations of mobility and immobility? Can reconceptualizing temporality transform and revitalize key scholarly and political debates?

  • global cosmopolitanisms
  • digital culture in relation to migrations
  • Asia Plural and deciphering translocal connections
  • mobilization of academic theories and conceptual networks of activist practices inside and outside of the academy
