BILL & MELINDA GATES FOUNDATION: Global Development Program (Financial Services for the Poor)

The goal of the foundation's Financial Services for the Poor initiative is to make these services far more available so families in developing countries can survive economic setbacks, build savings, and improve the health and education of their children. Our Financial Services for the Poor initiative will continue to seek ways to promote greater access to a range of high-impact financial services for the world’s poor. Funding support focuses on four areas: New and improved financial services products for the poor; business models that can speed growth in service supply; more predictable cash flow to service providers; improved financial policy-making through better data collection and analysis. Please note that they only make Financial Services for the Poor grants through requests for proposals (RFPs).  As of this posting there were no open RFPs, but please check the website for the most up to date information.
