TAPIR is open to candidates who have recently received their doctorate in social and political sciences or economics and whose research focuses on topics of international relations and security. Fellowships are granted for a duration of 24 months to prepare Fellows for an international career in policy-oriented research. Fellows spend three eight-month stays at research institutions or think tanks participating in the program – at least one on the Eastern, and one on the Western side of the Atlantic. Participating institutes include: Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, Institut français des relations internationales (IFRI), European Union Institute for Security Studies (EUISS), RAND Corporation, Chatham House, SAIS Center for Transatlantic Relations, the Institute for Strategic and International Studies (IEEI), the Center for International Relations (CIR), the Center for Security Studies (CSS) and the German Institute for International and Security Affairs / Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (SWP), Berlin and Brussels.
