K-12 Outreach

We offer a wide variety of ways to introduce international studies and regional specific content into the K-12 classroom. Teachers can make use of professional development workshops, curriculum development opportunities, kits for the classroom, and classroom presentations.

International Studies Professional Development for K-12 Educators (verified: 3/22/2007)
International studies workshops and institutes are collaborative efforts between the Einaudi Center and Area Programs. They give teachers the chance to work directly with Cornell scholars on international studies topics. Outreach professionals collaborate to design workshops that are interdisciplinary, innovative, and based upon New York State standards. Cornell professors and graduate students offer presentations and discussions on historical and current issues. Recent workshops include Migration as a Force for Global Change, Dam, Water Rights, and Displacement and Islam Around the World. Teachers receive handouts of primary documents, maps, lesson plans, and other materials to use in the classroom.

Additional K-12 Professional Development (verified: 3/22/2007)
Individual Area Programs also hold teacher training workshops throughout the school year. Professional Development opportunities can be found on our outreach calendar, or you a can contact area programs outreach coordinators.

Curriculum Units and Web-Based Resources
The international programs offer original curriculum units and resources, act as a clearing house for excellent web-based resources for teachers, and post curriculum units developed as a result of Area Programs sponsored curriculum development grants. Curriculum development pieces and resources can be found for a variety of world areas.

Curriculum Grants for Teachers
Many Area Programs offer curriculum development grants to teachers on a yearly basis. These competitive curriculum development grants are awarded based on proposals by New York State K-12 teachers. Area programs who offer these grants include the Institute for African Development, the Institute for European Studies, and the Latin American Studies Program. Those interested in submitting proposals are encouraged to contact area programs directly.

Classroom Presentations
Area Studies Programs offer a variety of classroom presentations. Regionally specific Speakers’ Bureaus offer Cornell professors, graduate students, and undergraduate students as a resource on culture, history, geography, economics, language and a variety of current world issues. Other classroom presentations are performance based using dance, music, and visual arts to share world cultures with students of all levels. Outreach professionals also offer Human Rights Panels to area schools.

Material Resources
Most Area Programs also offer portable resource kits designed for teachers to borrow for use in the classroom. These kits include lesson plans, videos, books, and material objects representing specific countries or regions of the world. From Ghana to Greece, Indonesia to India, teachers will find fully developed kits with materials for teaching about the world.

Video Lending Libraries
Most of the Area Studies Programs have video lending libraries available to K-12 teachers either free or for the cost of postage. These libraries include videos and publications especially for K-12 students and many that are designed to strengthen teacher knowledge on particular subject matter. While most of the lending libraries are accessible through searchable on-line databases, the Einaudi Center and Area Studies Outreach Professionals are happy to offer area specific film and publication packages for teachers and students. We will also work with teachers to put together international thematic film and publications packages
