Area Studies Professional Development for Teachers

Throughout the year individual Area Studies Programs offer professional development workshops for teachers on a variety of topics related to specific world areas. Workshops address current events, history, culture, language, and other subject matter. Programs make use of the expertise of associated faculty and graduate students to address topics of interest to teachers. Depending upon the subject matter, workshops are relevant to elementary, middle, and/or secondary teachers. Content areas addressed include English/Language Arts, Social Studies, Fine Arts, Foreign Languages, ESOL and others. Upcoming workshops include:

Individidual Areas Studies Professional Development

Europe's Less Commonly Taught Languages: Endangered Species? (verified: 9/27/2007)
The institute for European Studies will offer a workshop on October 12, 2007 on Europe's less commonly taught languages. European language policy and implemenation will be discussed. Foreign language teachers are encouraged to attend.

Burma, Border Zones, and the Karen People (verified: 9/27/2007)
The Southeast Asia Program will offer a two day workshop discussing Burma and the Karen people on October 19 and 20, 2007. Presentations will offer basic background information on Burma, an overview of life in the refugee camps, and an introduction to linguistic and ESL issues that teachers may encounter.
