Kaushik Basu


Kaushik Basu is a professor of economics at Cornell. From September 2012 to August 2016 he served as Senior Vice President and Chief Economist at the World Bank. Prior to that he was the Chief Economic Adviser to the Government of India at the Ministry of Finance. At Cornell, he has served as chair of the department of economics and director of the Center for Analytic Economics.

Prior to coming to Cornell, he was professor of economics at the Delhi School of Economics, where he founded and directed the Centre for Development Economics. He is also a founding member of the Madras School of Economics.

Kaushik Basu has published widely in the areas of development economics, industrial organization, game theory, and welfare economics. 

He is currently president of the International Economic Association. He has held advisory posts with the International Labor Organization, the World Bank, the Reserve Bank of India, and was, for several years, member of the steering committee of the Expert Group of Development Issues set up by the Swedish Government.
