Language Instruction

Add an international dimension to your curriculum

Cornell is unique in the depth and breadth of its language offerings. It is not unusual for even a less commonly taught language to be offered at four or five levels. At the first and second level, language instruction focuses on active communication skills. At the third level and above, content may differ based on the requirements of specialized degree programs.

Language Programs at Cornell
To help you find information on your language of interest, the Language Resource Center maintains the most comprehensive list of language programs and courses at the University.

Cornell Abroad
Many study abroad programs have language eligibility requirements. By visiting Cornell Abroad and beginning early to investigate programs available in the part of the world where you want to study, you will have time to satisfy the language requirements before applying to go abroad.

FALCON Program (Chinese/Japanese)
Cornell offers the FALCON program (Full-year Asian Language CONcentration) for students who need to gain working proficiency in Chinese or Japanese. FALCON students receive Cornell credit for their work and have access to Cornell University's experienced faculty and state-of-the-art audio-visual equipment.

Foreign Language Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships
The U.S. Department of Education provides support to National Resource Centers at institutions of higher education in the United States for research and training in foreign languages, area studies and other international studies. As a part of this federal program, Foreign Language Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships are available to Cornell students through the Institute for European Studies, Latin American Studies Program, East Asia Program, South Asia Program, and the Southeast Asia Program.
