Project Title:
Exploring transport and gender linkages in Indian cities
Project Abstract:
My research aims to explore and better understand transport and gender linkages, and its impact on the overall well-being (of women), in general and in special context to India. In particular, I will examine travel needs, patterns and behavior of women (across different age groups, income levels, employment status, and the different roles they play in the household). The research will be carried out in three cities of India (namely Delhi, Ahmedabad and Jaipur) with the main intention of understanding how women experience urban transport and how are their opportunities affected by their ability to access transport facilities? What factors guide the travel choices they make? What are the key challenges faced by them? How can transport planning and policies be made more responsive to women needs? I intend to do preliminary fieldwork over the summer in 2017 to identify specific study sites and concretise plans for further research.
