Encounter Indonesia Program: Immersive Bahasa Indonesia and Highland Cultures

Applications open for Summer 2025 Study Trip

This 12-day program takes Cornell undergraduates to stay and engage directly with the Torajanese in the highland region of South Sulawesi Province, Indonesia. 

Arriving and departing from Makassar students will travel to North Toraja by bus with ocean and mountain views and visiting cultural sites along the way. In North Toraja students will use their language skills visiting traditional villages, markets, and schools. They will explore local religious practices attending local rituals, exploring a cliff cemetery cave and a pilgrimage site.

Students will use Indonesian in practical, everyday contexts and be able to apply and expand their knowledge of and fluency in the language through structured and unstructured learning experiences.

Application Deadline: March 15, 2025

Program Dates: July 28 – August 8, 2025

Program Location: North Toraja, South Sulawesi, Indonesia

Pre-requisite: Enrollment in Indonesian language classes, or INDO 1100 (7-week 1-credit course), starting March 12. Enrollment deadline is March 18.
