The Institute for European Studies (IES) advances scholarship and teaching on Europe by placing Europe in a global context that acknowledges its role in both the history of modernization and colonization of other countries within and outside Europe.
We pursue an understanding of Europe’s contemporary relevance as well as its historical trajectory in shaping images, words, languages, ideas, politics, technologies, objects, information, food, and music among other things. Historically, IES was among the first major universities to unite Eastern and Western European studies, and today we update that perspective to include the region’s character as an immigrant continent and diaspora of various peoples.
IES is one of eight regional and thematic programs housed under the Mario Einaudi Center for International Studies, located in Uris Hall in the heart of Cornell’s campus in Ithaca, New York.
