Project Title:
Journey from the Victory: Vietnamese Foreign Policy from Independence to Interdependence, 1975-1995
Project Abstract:
The title references the 2006 film Journey from the Fall, which portrays the travails of political refugees after the end of the Vietnam War in 1975. My dissertation looks at the other side of the coin: the foreign policy of the supposed victors of that war. I retrace reunified Vietnam's path from triumph to despair as it became embroiled in wars against the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia and their sponsors, the People's Republic of China. I then look at Vietnam's path to resolving the Cambodian conflict in 1991 and finally normalizing relations with the United States and joining the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 1995. This summer's research focuses on the years 1991-1995.
