<p>N’Dri Thérèse Assié-Lumumba is a professor of African and African diaspora education, comparative and international education, social institutions, African social history, and the study of gender, in the Africana Studies and Research Center at Cornell University.</p>
<p>She is also a member of other Cornell graduate fields: education; global development (international development; international agriculture and rural development); and the Cornell Institute of Public Affairs (CIPA). She joined Cornell in 1991 as a Fulbright senior research fellow and Ford Foundation/Africana studies fellow. She served as director of the Cornell Program on Gender and Global Change and director of graduate studies of Africana studies. </p>

<p>Esra Akcan is the Michael A. McCarthy Professor of Architectural Theory in the Department of Architecture. Her scholarly work on a geopolitically conscious global history of urbanism and architecture inspires her teaching. She is the author of <em>Architecture in Translation: Germany, Turkey and the Modern House</em> (Duke University Press, 2012); <em>Turkey: Modern Architectures in History</em> (with S. Bozdoğan, Reaktion/University of Chicago Press, 2012); and <em>Open Architecture: Migration, Citizenship and the Urban Renewal of Berlin-Kreuzberg</em> (Birkhäuser-De Gruyter, 2018).</p>

<p><span>Kenneth Roberts is the Richard J. Schwartz Professor of Government. Kenneth Roberts teaches comparative and Latin American politics, with an emphasis on the political economy of development and the politics of inequality. His research focuses on political parties, populism, labor and social movements, and democratic resilience. He is especially interested in the cases of Chile, Peru, Venezuela, and Argentina.</span></p><p><span>Roberts earned his Ph.D. from Stanford University, with a specialization in comparative and Latin American politics. His teaching and research interests focus on democracy and the political economy of development, in particular the politics of inequality. Much of his published work explores the intersection of political parties, social movements, and populism, in Latin America and beyond. His most recent book is the co-edited </span><em>Democratic Resilience: Can the United States Withstand Rising Polarization</em><span> (Cambridge University Press). Other publications include </span><em>Changing Course in Latin America: Party Systems in the Neoliberal Era</em><span> (Cambridge University Press), </span><em>Deepening Democracy? The Modern Left and Social Movements in Chile and Peru</em><span> (Stanford University Press), and the co-edited volumes </span><em>The Resurgence of the Latin American Left</em><span> (Johns Hopkins University Press) and </span><em>The Diffusion of Social Movements</em><span> (Cambridge University Press). He has been a Fulbright scholar at the Universidad Carlos III-Instituto Juan March in Madrid, Spain and the Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales (FLACSO) in Santiago, Chile. Roberts has also been a visiting fellow of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, the Centre on Social Movement Studies at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Florence, Italy, the Stone Center for Latin American Studies at Tulane University, and the Kellogg Institute for International Studies at the University of Notre Dame. He has served as the Senior Associate Dean for the Social Sciences in Cornell’s College of Arts and Sciences, as well as the director of Cornell’s Latin American and Caribbean Studies program, and the director of Cornell’s Institute for the Social Sciences. His current research projects study polarization and democracy in contemporary Latin America, and crises of democracy in the global arena. He is active in the </span><a href="https://americandemocracycollaborative.org/">American Democracy Collaborative</a><span>.</span></p><p>Roberts led the Einaudi Center's democratic threats and resilience global research priority in academic years 2022–25.</p>

<p>Abby Cohn is a professor of linguistics and Southeast Asian studies. Her research interests include the Austronesian languages of Indonesia, with a particular focus on their phonetics, phonology, and morphology.</p>
<p>Recently she has focused on the sociolinguistic situation in Indonesia, as more young people switch from using a local language as their first language to Indonesian. In collaboration with Maya Ravindranath Abtahian and Tom Pepinsky, she is studying the fate of the languages of Indonesia with more than a million speakers, as reported in <em>The International Journal of the Sociology of Language</em>.</p>
<p>She was a Fulbright senior research scholar at Unika Atma Jaya. Her research project, "Language Contact in Indonesia: Shifts in Usage and their Structural Manifestations," investigated the mutual influences of Sundanese and Indonesian as a case study.<br>
<br>
Her publications include articles and book chapters in both general linguistics and areal linguistics venues. She is coeditor of <em>The Oxford Handbook of Laboratory Phonology </em>and coeditor-in-chief of the new online journal <em>Linguistics Vanguard</em>.</p>

<p>Andrea Bachner is a professor of comparative literature. She was the director of the East Asia Program for the term 2019-22 and a member of the East Asia Program steering committee and the CEAS editorial board. </p>
<p>She holds an MA from Munich University, Germany, and a PhD from Harvard University. Her research explores comparative intersections between Sinophone, Latin American, and European cultural productions in dialogue with theories of interculturality, sexuality, and mediality.</p>
<p>Her first book, <em>Beyond Sinology: Chinese Writing and the Scripts of Cultures </em>(Columbia University Press, 2014), analyzes how the Chinese script has been imagined in recent decades in literature and film, visual and performance art, design and architecture, both within Chinese cultural contexts and in different parts of the “West.” She is the co-editor (with Carlos Rojas) of the <em>Oxford Handbook of Modern Chinese Literatures</em> (2016) and has published articles in <em>Comparative Literature</em>, <em>Comparative Literature Studies</em>, <em>Concentric</em>, <em>German Quarterly</em>, <em>Modern Chinese Literature and Culture</em>, <em>Taller de Letras</em> as well as in several edited volumes. Her second book is <em>The Mark of Theory: Inscriptive Figures, Poststructuralist Prehistories</em> (Fordham University Press, 2017).</p>
<p>She is currently working on two projects: the first, <em>Against Comparison? Latin America and the Sinophone World</em>, reflects on the limits of comparison through an exploration of the rich history of cultural contact, exchange, and affinity between Latin American and Chinese cultures from the late nineteenth century to today; the second, <em>Membranicity</em>, constitutes a critique of the deployment of surface metaphors in contemporary theory. </p>

<p>Averell Schmidt is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Government and in the Jeb E. Brooks School of Public Policy. He studies international relations, with a focus on the politics of international law and organizations. He received his PhD from Harvard University in 2024, and joined Cornell in 2025 after completing a postdoctoral fellowship at Brown University.</p><p>Schmidt has two interrelated research agendas. One investigates how withdrawals from international organizations and multilateral treaties impact diplomatic relationships and the dynamics of international cooperation. The other examines the politics of human rights, with a focus on how international institutions affect human rights practices and how states contest these institutions. <p><span>Xiong Hui is a professor of comparative literature in the College of Foreign Languages and Cultures, Sichuan University, China. His research interests include translated literature and transcultural studies, compilation and research of historical materials on Modern Chinese Writers Studying Abroad.
