The Fulbright US–ASEAN Visiting Scholar Initiative provides opportunities for nationals of the ten ASEAN countries (Brunei, Burma, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam) to travel to the United States for scholarly and professional research for three to four months on issues that are relevant to ASEAN and central to the US–ASEAN relationship. The program is open to application from university faculty, foreign ministry and government officials, and professional staff in the private sector, of think tanks, or of other NGOs in ASEAN member states. The program is administered by the US Mission to ASEAN and the Council of International Exchange of Scholars (CIES), with funding from the Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Exchange.

The objective of the Fulbright US–ASEAN Visiting Scholar Initiative is to deepen people-to-people engagement and strengthen our educational ties. Fiscal year 2016 marks the fifth year of the Initiative, and to date, forty scholars from all ten ASEAN member countries have been awarded scholarships to pursue research focused on a wide range of subjects including teaching English as a second language, maritime security, climate change, health, political security, and wildlife trafficking.

Applications are accepted from citizens of all ASEAN member states. It is anticipated that 10 qualified applicants will be selected annually, preferably representing all 10 members states.
