Project Title:
Vitamin A Deficiency: Assessment and Implications for Dengue Immunopathology
Project Abstract:
This research proposal seeks to examine the biological relationship between vitamin A levels and the host immune response to dengue virus infection at the population level. The role of vitamin A on immune function is well described, however, we propose that levels of active vitamin A directly influence antiviral mechanisms against dengue virus. We will measure levels of vitamin A and immune response markers in patients with dengue infection presenting to hospital in Guayaquil, Ecuador. We hypothesize that deficient levels of vitamin A impair the immune response to dengue and that individuals with adequate levels of vitamin A have less severe outcomes from dengue infection compared to those with deficient levels.
