Foley, Kevin: Travel Grant - 2017-2018

College of Arts and Sciences
Project Title:
Political Communication in non-Democracies
Project Abstract:
This proposal requests funding for travel to Hong Kong, China to conduct a semester of research in Hong Kong gathering documentary sources for my dissertation research. Work would be conducted primarily in university libraries in Hong Kong collecting speeches from Chinese political leaders, party cadres and other prominent individuals and building a data set consisting of these political texts and other texts drawn from Chinese-language media sources. Libraries in Hong Kong, including at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the University of Hong Kong, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong, have excellent holdings in these types of materials, and access to these resources in Hong Kong will be much simpler than it would be in mainland China, where researcher access to libraries and archival holdings is currently very difficult. I estimate the cost of airfare to be $1,200 assuming prices may rise between now and April. Travel would be roughly from September 10, 2017 to December 20, 2017.
