According to historian Rachel Sandwell’s new book, “National Liberation and the Political Life of Exile: Sex, Gender, and Nation in the Struggle against Apartheid,” women played a larger role than traditional narratives suggest in their advocacy for policies on sexual education, birth control, family life, and child care.
