Project Title:
Law, Rights, and Legal Consciousness in South Africa
Project Abstract:
This project explores the use of legal strategies to advance social claims in South Africa, a country with one of the most progressive constitutions in the world. What accounts for increasing legal mobilization to advance social citizenship claims, and why do citizens use legal strategies for some claims, but not others? This study highlights the key role of beliefs in determining where and how individuals and social movements mobilize around socioeconomic rights. The data collection process involves an analysis of legal documents, formal interviews, and participant observation.
