FLAS Fellowships support Cornell graduate students (either at the doctoral or masters level) with $20,000 toward stipend and $18,000 toward tuition during the academic year; summer awards are up $5,000 towards tuition, partial travel funding (if applicable), and a $2,500 stipend to be used at an approved virtual or in-person intensive language program. For the academic year, doctoral and research masters students are able to secure top-off/supplemental funding from the Graduate School and/or at their College.
Students must study one the following less commonly taught modern foreign languages: Bengali, Burmese, Hindi, Indonesian, Khmer (Cambodian), Nepali, Persian, Punjabi, Sinhala, Tagalog (Filipino), Tamil, Thai, Tibetan, Urdu, and Vietnamese. In addition to taking a language course during both semesters of the grant, academic year FLAS Fellows are required to take one area studies course related to their region of focus each semester.
