Project Title:
Historical Geographies of Environmentalism and Conservation in Aceh, Indonesia
Project Abstract:
My dissertation constructs a longue durée social and environmental history of Aceh, Indonesia. The study begins with the Kingdom of Aceh Darussalam in the 17th century, and continues to the early-mid 20th century after Aceh was brought under colonial rule. The goal of this project is to analyze long term environmental change, land management regimes, and the socio-cultural factors that governed relations with nature—from Islamic and customary law to Western science and conservation practices on a global scale. This project will contribute to the literature on the history of global conservation and science, animal histories, and violent environments—the relations between conflict and natural resources.
