Project Title:
The Persistence of Historical Violence in Contemporary Art
Project Abstract:
How does contemporary art react to and reflect on violent histories of the past as well as those yet in the making? My research consists of tracing the persistent re-figurations of the violent histories in the realm of contemporary art. I propose to do so, specifically, through focusing on an post-war, public exhibition, the Documenta, which takes place every five years in Kassel, Germany and which will expand its curatorial program to Athens, Greece for its 14th edition this summer. Supplementing a historical consideration of the Documenta exhibition with face to face encounters and conversations with the large community of diasporic artists, who are currently producing works in Berlin, I propose to trace how the relation between the arts and violent histories are constructed and reconstructed throughout the last six decades.
