Graduate Funding Options for Latin America/Caribbean

Lourdes Benería Award

LACS award for those graduate students (including those pursuing professional degrees)  researching gender or planning in Latin America or the Caribbean. This funding is for in-country research costs, excluding international airfare.

Eligibility exceptions

Those graduating in December 2023 or May 2024 are not eligible for this funding.


Summer Research Grants

LACS offers up to three research grants to qualified graduate students who need to conduct field research over the summer for in-country research costs, excluding international airfare. This funding requires a successful petition to Cornell to travel internationally.

Amount

Up to $1,500 each.

Eligibility

Criteria for selection include a substantive focus on Latin America or the Caribbean. Such grants are not intended to cover international travel costs (flights from the U.S. to the country of study). If you need a grant for the cost of international airfare to get to the country of your study site from the U.S., please apply for an Einaudi Center Travel Grant.

Travel Grants

Einaudi travel grants for airfare. This funding provides international airfare where Summer Research Grants and Lourdes Benería Awards do not.

Amount

Up to $2,000. 

Eligibility

Graduate students or students enrolled in Cornell’s professional schools are eligible, with the following exceptions:

  • Students graduating in May 2024

  • Students who have not used 2022, 2023, or 2024 awards

Conference Grants

Conference grants of $500 are available for those students presenting papers at a conference during the period from September 1, 2023, through August 15, 2024.

How to Apply

Contact the Program Manager at lacs@cornell.edu if you have questions and when you want to submit your application. The award may only be granted once per academic year and only after or at the same time the graduate student applies for funding from their department and/or Graduate school. You will be asked to provide an invitation letter to the conference later in the process.

Application opens September 1, 2023, for Conference held from October 1, 2023, through August 15, 2024. Applications are approved on a rolling basis.
