Research Interests: Astara Light's research centers on the work of contemporary Indonesian artists who employ a diverse range of visual techniques and philosophical approaches to speak to global issues. Her dissertation considers how artists visually highlight ecological problems by drawing on spiritual perspectives unique to Indonesia. In particular, the impact of artists who exhibit their work nationally and internationally, including in Japan, Singapore, Australia and Hong Kong. Other research interests include performance and movement theory, religious studies, indigenous studies, and national identity.
