Emre Susamci
IES Graduate Fellow 2023-2024
Emre Susamci is interested in international legal and global intellectual history in the 19th and 20th centuries. His geographical focus is on the Middle East and Europe. As a historian of international law, his prospective dissertation deals with the history of “humanitarian intervention." By legal historians, the adoption or acceptance of international norms is usually understood Eurocentrically as a mere diffusion process of "European ideas" and/or "European power." Emre’s project will examine the idea and practice of "humanitarian intervention" in international law as an outgrowth of global interdependence with its empowering effects in negotiating norms of international law between all participants.
