Portrait of Muzakki Bashori

Visiting Fellow

Muzakki Bashori is a 2024-2025 Fulbright Visiting Scholar from Indonesia. He is currently a lecturer (Aassistant Pprofessor) affiliated with the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Negeri Semarang. Twice awarded LPDP (Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education) scholarships, he pursued higher education overseas. He obtained his Master's degree in Applied Linguistics (2015-2016) from the University of Groningen, the Netherlands. He then earned his Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics specializing in ASR (Automatic Speech Recognition)-based Language Learning from Centre for Language Studies, Radboud University (2018-2022) in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. His writing has appeared in international outlets like Computer-Assisted Language Learning, System, Innovation in Language Learning and Teaching, JALT-CALL, and Studies in English Language and Education. He also regularly contributes to the Opinion Rubric in prominent national media outlets such as Kompas.id.

His research project, “The Future of Javanese Language and the Effects of a Digital Game on Its Preservation”, aligns with Professor Abigail C. Cohn’s expertise in language use and language shift in Indonesia. Winning a large-scale national opinion writing competition on the related topic, held by the Linguistic Society of Indonesia in 2022, fueled his passion for preserving Javanese. As a native speaker himself, he is particularly interested in the future of this largest local language in Indonesia, despite its seemingly 'stable' status. He questions how it is already at risk of endangerment and explores the potential of game-based language learning to aid in its preservation. He is eager to learn and collaborate with the SEAP community.
