Portrait of Norhafiza Mohd Hed

Visiting Fellow

Norhafiza Mohd Hed is a Visiting Scholar at SEAP for the academic year 2024-2025. She is currently affiliated with the Department of Malaysian Studies at Sultan Idris Education University Malaysia, as a senior lecturer. Specializing in comparative politics, her research focuses on political participation, political behavior, and social movements. Originally from Malaysia, she obtained her doctorate from the University of Sheffield, United Kingdom with a thesis on the dynamics of youth political participation in Southeast Asia, with a particular emphasis on Malaysia. Her postdoctoral project continues this theme, exploring intra-generational inequalities in political participation among Malaysian youth. This research aims to debunk the myth of youth political apathy and offer solutions to enhance political engagement across diverse youth groups in Malaysia. During her tenure at Cornell, Mohd Hed will collaborate with the Professor Thomas Pepinsky, the Walter F. LaFeber Professor of Government. She has authored the monograph Youth Wave: Young People and Politics in Malaysia and has contributed to various scholarly journals including the Journal of Youth Studies, Asian Journal of Humanities and Social Studies, and The Journal of Legislative Studies. Mohd Hed is eager to share her insights and engage with fellow scholars at Cornell, aiming to deepen the understanding of Malaysian political dynamics and their broader implications for global democracy.
