The dramatic escalation of violence in Israel and Palestine should prompt not only horror, grief, and dismay, but also reflection and action toward lasting peace and justice.

This virtual panel will provide expert perspectives on past and future prospects for peace and justice in Israel and Palestine. The event will include a moderated discussion with members of the audience.

The goal of this conversation is to deepen understanding by creating a space for dialogue between scholarly experts and individuals with a variety of perspectives and experiences. Our conversation will center humanity and the possibility of future repair, and encourage good faith participation, while also recognizing the trauma and grief that so many in our community are experiencing. Our ability to speak and learn is accompanied by a responsibility to listen and respect human life. We will stand firmly against any attempt to intimidate, threaten, or harass any member of our community, as we continue to seek possibilities for peace and restorative justice.

Laidlaw Scholars at Cornell will share their summer research and leadership-in-action experiences at this annual symposium.

Beginning in the Klarman Hall Auditorium, a panel of scholars will share their work and experiences. The presentation will be followed by poster presentations throughout the Groos Family Atrium.

The Laidlaw Undergraduate Leadership and Research Scholarship Program provides generous funding to first- and second-year undergraduates over two years as they pursue internationally focused research, engage in leadership training and a leadership-in-action experience, and join a global network of like-minded peers.

This talk considers Iran’s relations with America at a time when global concerns over racial politics, gender relations, and social inequality dominated world headlines. Iran's growing engagement with civil rights and gender relations came at an awkward moment in its history, as the ruling monarchy took on themes of social import despite its ironic legacy of political dictatorship. As in America, Iranians dealt with the role of the police in society; the avant-garde in art; and a sexual revolution of their own. However, as my research will show, the bipolar world that Iran navigated in diplomacy sometimes fell apart in the intellectual and political spaces that grappled with race, gender, and social change.

Part of Cornell’s yearlong exploration of freedom of expression, this event from Global Cornell brings together the campus community to discuss how Cornell can protect academic freedom while collaborating with institutions and scholars in places with different political realities and views on free speech.

Allan Goodman, chief executive officer of the Institute of International Education, joins Vice Provost for International Affairs Wendy Wolford to discuss:

How can universities like Cornell provide a safe haven for scholars whose right to free expression is threatened?How can universities act to promote scholarship, free expression, and global collaboration?Cornell has worked with the Institute of International Education’s Scholar Rescue Fund (IIE-SRF) for over a decade to provide yearlong fellowships for displaced academics and human rights defenders. IIE also supports the Humphrey Fellows Program in the Department of Global Development and Fulbright fellowships for undergraduate students from across the university.

Research travel grants provide international travel support for graduate and professional students to conduct short-term research or fieldwork outside the United States. Global PhD Research Awards fund fieldwork for 9 to 12 months of dissertation research.

The Einaudi Dissertation Proposal Development Program (DPD) supports 12 PhD students annually by offering seminars, workshops, mentoring sessions, and up to $5,000 for summer research. Applicants’ research projects must focus on global issues, but the proposed research setting may be international or domestic.

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program supports U.S. citizens to study, conduct research in any field, or teach English in more than 150 countries. Students who wish to begin the program immediately after graduation are encouraged to start the process in their junior year. Recent graduates are welcome to apply through Cornell.

The Fulbright program at Cornell is administered by the Mario Einaudi Center for International studies. Applicants are supported through all stages of the application and are encouraged to start early by contacting fulbright@einaudi.cornell.edu.

The East Asia Program (EAP) offers one-semester fellowships for doctoral students working on East Asia-related projects, travel grants for graduate students conducting field research in China, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan, and a small number of East Asian language study grants.
